Why does your project exist?
"We find meaning in, or give meaning to, such events (in film) by connecting them to other events so that they have a significant place in a narrative framework or causal pattern. Similarly, when we are watching narrative fiction films, we are often left with questions as to why the story took the turn it did at a particular point, or why a character behaved a certain way in a certain scene" (Thomson-Jones, 2008, p. 95).
The motive of creating meaning, interpretation and a message is often one of the striving goals for the existence of a film. It furthermore helps it to differentiate from other films.
This leads me to this week's question:
⭐Why will my project stand out, and how will it fit within the larger world of media?
The premise of my role project animatic is to create a story about a lone cloud shepherd who works day and night tending to cloud sheep on a small island. Until one day, a woman gets stranded on the island. At first, displeased, then later fascinated, the cloud shepherd becomes attached to the woman. When the woman gets rescued from the island, the cloud shepherd becomes distraught as her cloud sheep go rogue. Leaving it up to the cloud shepherd to stop them before the woman is drowned by the storm.
As my goal is to improve my storytelling both visually and narratively, I want to explore themes and messages such as loneliness as a destructive force and perseverance while creating a short story that has a strong narrative, genre, style and characters.
When I first began conceptualizing my story, I was inspired by Studio Ghibli and Pixar. For Studio Ghibli, I wanted to encapsulate the art style, otherworldly themes and meaningful relationships. On the other hand, I wanted to utilize the Pixar narrative structure to plot my story, along with using the idea of irony and contrast in my character. For instance, a cloud that doesn't live in the sky.
Narrative-wise, I think the closest story I can think of that is similar to mine is Drifting Home. The Netflix animated film is about the strained relationship of two childhood friends. Through a turn of events, the two friends and a group of other sixth graders find themselves floating in the middle of the sea on a housing complex where the two protagonists grew up. The story features themes of isolation, grief and friendship.
Similarly, my story dives into the human experience of isolation and building new bonds using a literal interpretation of an island. Similar to the film, I also include a spirit that has a connection to both the main/secondary character and the setting.
I plan to make my animatic project stand out through the use of visual and narrative storytelling. Likewise, I want my audience to feel satisfied with how the story plays out while feeling engaged throughout the whole story. Though my story and style may feel like something you've seen before, I hope to incorporate my own sense of theatrics and storytelling into it.
