Why does your project exist?

Throughout history the purpose and use of media has shifted rapidly. Whether it's used for educating, raising awareness, entertaining or testing out a new technology and style.

Everything in media has a purpose.

So, here's this week's questions:

🌟Why does your project exist and what do you want to say to your audience?

🌟How does your project concept fit into the larger media landscape of similar projects and why will your project stand out/be relevant etc?

There's a lot to unpack here but let's start with how my project came to be. To begin we were assigned with the task of creating a walking simulator of sorts in a way that tells a story through its environment and creative choices. As the main aspect is storytelling, we wanted to have a clear sense of an exposition, rising action, climax and resolution. We also wanted a clear theme and message that was in some way relatable to our audience. Likewise, after various brainstorming and altercations we decided to tell a story exploring a parent and child relationship along with following the mind and emotions of a child that's being neglected. We figured that the idea of childhood, relationships and the mind are things that all humans experience and likewise will connect with our audience.

Talking about our audience we at first wanted our audience to feel fully involved in the story by having multiple interactions and the memories in first person POV but we decided to scale back and have you be able to walkthrough and watch the memories play out. Nevertheless, we still want our audience to feel involved by having them within the scenes. Though I feel it would be a lot more impactful if it was paced out a bit better, but we only have so much time.

Commonly the main form of media that is used to raise awareness or provoke emotion are films rather than video games. As games are more used with the intention of escaping reality and connecting with others. However, this doesn't mean they don't. For instance, Whisper of a Rose, This war of mine, Deux Ex, Flower, Elude, Watch Dogs 2, Unravel, The last of Us: Left Behind, Papo y Po,

Depression quest, Shelter, The way of life. (TeachThought Staff, 2016)

Just like my last blog's example. That Dragon, Cancer is a great example of a game that almost solely focuses on raising awareness. However, I do feel our project leans more into exploring emotion than raising awareness.

Lastly, we plan to make our project stand out by using artistic conventions like changing styles from realistic to cartoony, colour, symbolism, layout, lighting and so on to help further our story and message.
