Why does my project exist?✐

(Moment Factory, 2021)

Why do we make art? To express emotion, advocate, entertain? Whether it's a private notebook sketch or a public art installation there are many reasons for people to express their creativity.

So this leaves me to wonder why do I make art or more accurately:

⭐Why does my project exist and how is it relevant within the world of media?

Well, my driving premise of my Yagan project is the idea that "Life still grows even under hard circumstances". I decided to do this as my message as I wanted to do something that matched my environmental theme, has narrative potential and is relatable to a wide audience. To recap from other blogs, my idea was to create a seasonal time lapse showing civilization being built while trying to survive the environment's harsh conditions. My intention is to make my audience feel captivated by the contrast of nature in a city environment as well as giving them an opportunity to focus on the smaller things in life as they watch events unfold like a nature documentary.

Similarly, for my specialization project I plan on creating an animatic that helps me towards becoming a story artist by pushing my illustration, composition and storytelling skills. My animatic will be about a young bear cub waking up from hibernation to explore winter. However, as his mischief ensues he is confronted with the realities of winter. I likewise wanted to do a simple story that features the themes of connectivity, discovery and innocence in order to make a general audience feel bittersweet and nostalgic as they witness the growth of childhood.

Back to my Yagan Project.

As my project is for artistic purposes and is displayed in public I would consider it a piece of Public art. "Public art can be a subject, object and/or process. It comprises permanent or temporary artworks, either physical or immaterial, on sites that have open public access and are located outside museums and galleries" (Zebracki, 2012, p. 2).

A closer example of public art that matches my project is Moment Factory's media wall in AT&T Discovery District. The wall “Evolv[es] over a 24-hour period, [and its] original cinematic capsules offer a wide variety of high-impact show features that provide moments of collective enjoyment while a collection of ambient capsules encourage pause and relaxation throughout the day" (Constantine, 2021).  The media wall is similar to Yagan tower as it displays digital artwork on a large screen and has immersive qualities like lights and music. However, I won't be using lights in my project, just the tower as well as my project is 2D while Moment Factory works in 3D and realism.

I plan for my Yagan project to stand out through its use of art and story. I want to construct my artwork so it feels like the people around the tower are in a field watching the construction of the town. I hope to use a unique or interesting art style such as art nouveau or my own style. I also want to tell a simple story that people can familiarize with.
