Capturing Audience Attention🖌

(McVee, 2016)

This Trimester I have been tasked with producing a piece of visual content for public display on the Yagan Tower. Likewise, after some ideating, I've decided that my project will feature a time lapse of seasons as plants and life grow from a deserted place.

Though I've got an idea of what my project will be in order for my project to be successful I'll still need to consider one more thing…

My Audience.

So, who is my audience? Well, the Yagan tower is positioned in the heart of the Northbridge Perth district near commuting areas. So, it will be seen by everyone who enters the city or passes by. Likewise, my project will cater to a general audience.

Since, my project is for artistic purposes rather than advertising I would equate my project to that of public art more specifically a mural. Murals are illustrations that are often displayed in public areas such as buildings, alleyways, park walls and so on. Some commercial examples of murals that are like my project, in Perth is the Pelican mural by Amok Island and the Australian wildlife mural by Melski McVee. I feel they both encapsulate my project as they both take on the theme of nature.

Most noticeably Murals heavily rely on visual communication to capture audiences. According to a study on Visual Communication “When we refer to visual communication, we mean acts of representation where on the one hand we have a text maker who uses a set of visual resources to communicate a set of ideas, attitude, and values to others. But on the other hand, as semiotics has taught us (Cobley 2010), things like natural phenomena can communicate to us by virtue of their form or cultural meanings such as the moon, or patterns on an animal to mean danger (Machin, 2014, p. 7)”. This coincides with how majority of Mural artworks are intent on sending messages or telling stories through their subject matter as well as using political, social, cultural, and ethical contexts'.

The location of murals plays a part in catering to their audience as the type of artwork and message are usually relevant to the community.  For instance, Melski makes her work to be "simultaneously whimsical and personal and reflect cultural and historic elements of the locations in which they are painted. A celebration of what is locally beautiful and quintessentially Australian" (McVee, n.d.). Amok also does the same as his Pelican mural is located in Canning bridge where a lot of Pelicans can be seen by the river.

Presides the message and location the general aesthetic also aids in capturing an audience. For instance, the style may be unique, engaging or even recognizable as that artists trademark. For example, Amok's  "work embodies the accuracy and precision representative of technical drawings" by " [rendering] his subjects to near bare minimum geometric elements of form, and places paramount importance on the use of a carefully considered colour palette (Island, n.d.)”.

Back to my project.

In order to capture my audience using messaging I aim to show how life still grows even under hard circumstances through my work. I feel sending a message about life and the earth is universal. Hence, it will be relevant to my audience.

I also want to use this subject matter of nature to captivate my audience as I feel the contrast of a natural landscape to a concert city will allow it to stand out. I furthermore want to use my canvas size to structure my work so the audience feels small as if they were watching in secret like a nature documentary.

Aesthetic wise I plan to implement an art nouveau style with a mix of my own style to lean out from reality and make it interesting to look at.

Lastly, things I could add/change to attract my audience would be to play with my colour pallet more as bold colours are often more engaging. I could also make my artwork more Australian by using Australian wildlife rather than just general wildlife to appeal to my Australian location.
