My role on the production🎥🖉
My role on the production🎥🖉
Over the course of the past few weeks,
I have explored the different ways commercial walking simulators entertain,
communicate and market their audience as well as how I could use these
techniques within my project. Well, today I will be rounding up with my last
blog discussing more about my own project.
My last question is: 🌟 What are you producing
in your environmental storytelling project and how will your work enhance the
final project as well as your Spec work and how you will improve your
techniques.
My initial role in my environmental storytelling project is to work on crafting the storyboards and drawing one of the backgrounds for the project. However, I also worked a lot on managing and working in unreal such as blocking out the layout and sourcing and adding in the assets. So far, I have produced story beats, storyboards, a synopsis and beat by beat breakdown, block out, asset implementation and a drawn background with some background drafts. I plan that I will enhance the final project by doing whatever needs to be done to the best of my ability so that the final project will be finished and presentable.
Next is my specialisation.
For my specialisation, I am working towards becoming a storyboard
artist. I likewise, have been dabbling with illustration, cinematography,
composition, storytelling and film language. As for my involvement in the
project I used my specialisation to help with creating story beats of our
project and how it would roughly play out. I also, expanded on this and created
various storyboards outlining both the animations for the memories and the
gameplay in-between. Another thing I worked on was the environments in the
project including drawing them and adding assets into unreal. Working on the
environments still relates to my specialisation as it uses my illustration and
composing skills.
I plan to improve my techniques by using the project as an
opportunity to practice and experiment with my storyboarding skills, workflow,
problem solving and management.
While
working on the storyboard I had the opportunity to do various versions to
adjust to feedback and fix stuff up. This helped in knowing what was working
like the actions or composition and what wasn't working like the shots or
story.
It also was the first time I experimented with
using story beats as a way to visually communicate the key points in the
narrative and how they work together. I
first learnt of story beats from the video "tips for making a story
portfolio for feature and TV animation" (Tonika Pantoja, 2018) while working on my specialisation. I feel
this was a good way to help me understand what we are trying to portray in the story,
and I would definitely use it again.
The
other techniques I got to improve on was my workflow, problem solving and
management. As I was slightly unfamiliar with unreal engine, I had to do a lot
of research and problem solving to do things like adding in the backgrounds or
working with blueprints. It, likewise, also helped me understand the workflow
from blocking out to implementation. Furthermore, I also did a lot of
management like working on my teams Gantt chart, communicating on discord and
organising our drive.
Workflow,
problem solving, and management also work to improve my specialisation as
storyboards are usually done in a short amount of time so I need to be able to
be efficient in my work and fix any problems that may occur like needing to
redraw scenes or program issues.
